Description
A Thai temple consists of two parts:
- Phuttha-wat
"Phutthawat" is the area which is dedicated to Buddha. It generally contains several buildings.
- Sangha-wat.
"Sangha" is a word in Pali or Sanskrit that can be translated roughly as "association" or "assembly," "company" or "community" with common goal.
"Vihara"
The Vihara is a replica of the Bot (also called Ubosot) and is used to keep Buddha images. In central Thailand the Vihara is smaller than the Bot.
The Vihara is often enclosed by a gallery walled outside and open inside having generally square pillars to support the roof. Along the galleries are many Buddha images modeled in stucco or cast in bronze. In a few cases the walls of the verandah are decorated with paintings.
