"Takien” (ตะเคียน) or "Nang Takien” (นางตะเคียน) is a kind of "NANG MAI”* (นางไม้) is a female spirit inhabiting in hopea odorata trees.

In Thai folklore, "NANG MAI" means that a spirit inhabits the tree. The tree shall not be cut without warning the spirit in order to let her find another tree. Takien wood is prized for making boats and offerings must be made to avoid upsetting the tree spirits. In the superstitious way, when Takien wood secrets the resin it means the tree spirit is strong and has powerful supernatural magic to harm anyone who tries to challenge her power. Takien wood also makes auspicious amulets. It's thought to have some sort of power.

*"NANG MAI" is similar to "Nymph" concept, a
female minor nature deity typically associated
with a particular location or landform.
